Giacchè: (re)discovering the wine of the Etruscans

Known and enjoyed since the time of the Etruscans, the Giacchè has today been "rediscovered" and replanted in the Cerveteri area by a winery deeply rooted in the territory, one that believed in this grape variety and its aging potential, going so far as to produce it as a single varietal both dry – with the first vintage in 2003 – and as a passito.
It has since been included in the appellation IGP Lazio.
Giacchè was the name locals used to call this grape variety, inspired by its distinctly dark color; being very rich in anthocyanins, it was used for blending with other wines.

The Giacchè, which was later found to be a clone of Lambrusco Maestri, had such low yields that it was uprooted to make way for more profitable farming better suited to the market of the time.
The aromas of this ancient grape variety evoke intense wild notes of undergrowth and red fruit, giving this wine a well-defined identity.
It presents a beautiful structure and alcohol content well supported by a significant acidity, making this wine the ideal pairing for game dishes and cheeses.
The signature dish of Cerveteri's cuisine has been game since ancient times.
Products such as wild boar, hare, and pheasant – served with pasta or polenta, or as main courses, perhaps grilled or alla cacciatora – bring out the best qualities of this extraordinary wine.
I recommend serving it in large glasses at a temperature of 18–20°C.
