The unmistakable charm and the great, well-established culture of Italian wine are spread worldwide thanks to numerous seminars, in-depth sessions and walk-around wine tasting events.
More specifically, the promotional tour Simply Italian Great Wines, following its latest stops in Great Britain and the United States, will present and showcase Italian wine in Japan (December 1, Tokyo) and immediately after in China (December 3, Beijing).
The latter, with as many as 21.5 million liters of wine imported in December 2013 (approximately 74 million euros), represents the world's leading country in red wine consumption. Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, in addition to recording very high consumption levels, represent the heart of this market.
ISTAT data for the first nine months of 2014 confirm a positive trend for Italian exports to China, with a volume growth of approximately 6.2% and an annual sales growth rate of 15%. More specifically, sales of mid-to-high range products grew by approximately 430% between 2008 and 2013, with a further projected increase of 60% by 2017.
As previously mentioned, before reaching Beijing, Simply Italian Great Wines will stop in Tokyo, one of the largest wine markets in the Asia-Pacific region alongside China and Australia.
A growth of 7.6% in value and 5.1% in volume has in fact been estimated for Italian wine imports as of September 2014.
For this reason, Italy represents one of the five reference countries for wine imports in Japan, and one of the few – along with France – to have recorded a positive trend in the first 9 months of 2014.
