Sangiovese ("blood of Jove") is the most widely planted Italian grape. It is the exclusive or predominant basis of Chianti Classico DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG.
It comes in numerous clonal expressions: Brunello (Montalcino), Prugnolo Gentile (Montepulciano), Morellino (Scansano), Sangiovese Romagnolo. It produces wines of good body, sustained acidity, elegant tannins and profiles of sour cherry, violet, earth and tobacco.
