Muller Thurgau, let's discover this Alto Adige grape variety

Il Muller Thurgau is a wine obtained from the grape variety of the same name, which today is widely cultivated in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, and also in Italy. In particular, in our country it is grown mainly in Trentino and Alto Adige, in whose valleys the best Italian Muller Thurgau is probably produced. Favoring hillside terrain, including terraced vineyards, at altitudes between 500 and 900 meters above sea level, this is precisely why it has found its ideal habitat in this territory.

Muller Thurgau is one of the few grapes whose inventor and birth date are known exactly. It is known, in fact, that this grape variety originated in 1882, when a Swiss researcher, Herman Muller, born in Thurgau, created the cross between Riesling and Sylvaner. From recent DNA research, it appears that the second variety was actually Chasselas.

Beyond its history, which is certainly interesting but all in all fairly recent, for us Muller Thurgau is one of the most important grape varieties in the entire national wine landscape. We therefore tasted and describe the Muller Thurgau Aristos from the Alto Adige-based Cantina Valle Isarco.

The grapes come from vineyards situated at approximately 650–700 meters above sea level, planted on alluvial, stony soils rich in skeleton. The hillside orientation allows for excellent sun exposure and favorable ventilation, thus preventing the onset of mold. All conditions that give the wine particularly fine characteristics.

The vinification of this Muller Thurgau involves a gentle pressing followed by temperature-controlled fermentation. The maturation of a full seven months on the noble lees takes place in stainless steel containers, with no malolactic fermentation. Bottling follows, so that the wine retains its typical freshness and aromatic characteristics.

Let us now move on to the wine tasting.

Muller Thurgau Aristos 2015

A pale straw yellow color with greenish glints, on the nose it reveals itself as slightly aromatic with notes of white elderflower. This is followed by herbaceous and mineral hints, of white fruit such as apple and pear, then sage, nutmeg, and a pleasant citrus finish. On the palate the wine is dry, fresh, and savory with distinct citrus echoes, yet at the same time with a good softness. Delicately almond-tinged finish.

A very pleasantly drinkable wine, it is an excellent companion for aperitivo or to be enjoyed alongside seafood appetizers, but can also be tried throughout the meal.
