Sicily is Italy's largest wine region by vineyard area and one of Europe's oldest: the Greeks introduced viticulture here over 2,700 years ago. Today the island is at the heart of an enological renaissance.
Nero d'Avola is the most widespread indigenous grape. On Mount Etna, altitudes up to 1,000 metres and volcanic soils create unique terroirs: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio produce wines of exceptional elegance, often compared to Burgundies. Notable DOCGs include Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only DOCG.
Pantelleria with its Passito from Zibibbo, Salina with Malvasia delle Lipari, the Egadi and minor islands produce heroic niche wines.
