The European Union has long been at the center of controversy regarding Germany's hegemony, economic policies (imposed fiscal and monetary measures) and the difficulties of countries like Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain.
To us Italians it very often seems like we have only gotten "the bad side" of this union, which frequently creates problems for us regarding the protection of our typical products.
The latest slap in the face is the reform of the wine sector that allows the production of wine… without grapes! Among the stands present at Vinitaly, in fact, there was also one from a Hungarian company showcasing "wines" produced through the fermentation of fruits other than grapes, such as raspberries and currants. According to Coldiretti, this would constitute an abuse against a product that has always, since ancient times, been made with grapes.
Producers and consumers are being harmed, and fraud is certainly being facilitated! The situation would be further aggravated, again according to Coldiretti, by the permission to use terms such as Prosecco, Aglianico, Montepulciano on the label for table wines, clearly undermining the interests of wineries and consumers.
In short: we are on the road to chaos.
