Luigi Veronelli a Visionary in the World of Wine

On November 29, 2014, ten years will have passed since the death of Luigi Veronelli: journalist, writer, philosopher, gastronome; unanimously recognized as the initiator of modern food and wine criticism.
While awaiting that date, the "Comitato Decennale Luigi Veronelli" has been established, which, through a packed calendar of events, aims to commemorate the late journalist and to transmit and spread his thoughts and works.
For those who are interested, there is a partial but significant collection in a biography of him recently written by Gian Arturo Rota and Nichi Stefi, his long-time collaborators.
The legacy of Luigi Veronelli is of the utmost importance and highly relevant to everyone.

Esteemed worldwide, Veronelli was discussed in a post by Egle Pagano on the Blog'N'Rollo of the Secolo XIX, which emphasizes the important role played by Luigi, who had the merit of conveying to the general public the pleasure of tasting wine to appreciate its organoleptic complexity, as well as the desire to discover its territorial origins and the story of those who made it.
Veronelli not only served as a guide and driving force along the path of flavors and aromas, but also pointed criticism and journalism toward the way of proper communication: one made of competence and passion – in short, an example for all.

Not the least of the merits attributed to him was that of giving continuous support, help and encouragement to artisan producers, considering them as the authors of something that is an integral part of the joy of living.
In narrating the aesthetic and hedonistic component of wine, Veronelli never forgot its connection with the land and with the men and women who work it; he defended with vigor and clarity the wines and foods born of peasant civilization, made of culture, knowledge, and respect for the territory and the environment, against a homogenizing and impoverishing globalization.
Luigi used and skillfully forged an entirely new language made of references to images and allusions to emotional sensations, and his works still represent a vademecum for those who speak or write about wine.

In light of today's people's desires for genuineness, traceability and territorial uniqueness of agricultural products, his extraordinary foresight and the great relevance of his thinking are evident.
From my part, thank you for standing in defense of true wines and foods, children of knowledge rooted in the most diverse territories that must be preserved.
Thank you for having left an important mark in this regard, one worth measuring ourselves against.
