Pinot Noir: Ottin's Proposal from Valle d'Aosta

Elio Ottin, originally from Saint Denis, an agricultural expert, fruit grower and winemaker like many in Valle d'Aosta, has been making an increasingly strong impression since 2007 thanks to the quality of his wines.

Refined, elegant labels, without too much fuss but beautiful.

Native grape varieties and Pinot Nero, minimal fertilization and treatments reduced to the bare minimum, just enough to prevent powdery mildew and downy mildew.

We are in one of the Italian regions where the Pinot Nero finds some of its finest expressions; the vines often come directly from Burgundy and are mature, averaging more than half a century old.

Ottin cultivates it at 590 meters above sea level, where the terrain is naturally steep and organized into terraced plots.

Selection takes place already in the vineyard and the harvest is done by hand.

His Pinot Nero presents itself with a light garnet red color; on the nose one immediately detects a strong bouquet of red fruits, currants, wild strawberry, pepper and other spices, followed by leather… Mineral, almost ferrous.

On the palate the tannin is elegant and silky, supported by good acidity. We might have expected a fuller body, but it works well as it is.

We tasted a 2013 Pinot Nero, soft and fragrant, with a good structure and rich in spice notes.

Best paired with meat sauce dishes, red or white meat grills. From 10 to 15 euros for a wine well worth buying.
