Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Mammut

We are in Abruzzo, in Villamagna (CH), halfway between the mountains and the sea.

The Cascina del Colle winery stands on the site where a Mammoth tusk was discovered — the famous and mighty prehistoric animal that gives its name to the Montepulciano we are about to taste!
The D'Onofrio family farms fifteen hectares of vineyard organically; and from the San Severino plot, at 215 metres above sea level, come the grapes that give life to this unconventional wine.

An ancient wine, it ferments and matures in steel, expressing all its power in its deep ruby red colour — a dense ink that sets the stage for a decidedly fruity nose.
The palate is pervaded by clear notes of blackberry, cherry and sweet spices, accompanied by a very long finish and an alcohol content (15°) in perfect balance between freshness and a substantial body.
It closes with chocolatey notes that temper an exuberant and intense tannin.

All the strength of this wine lies in its ability to express a territory to the fullest — without frills or artifice, where nothing but the grape is the absolute protagonist of this little masterpiece.
Let yourself be seduced by its bursting force, its extreme balance, its primordial majesty.
A wine that seems to have inherited from the Mammoth something more than just its name: power, strength and imposing presence!
A perfect match with the traditional dishes of Abruzzese cuisine, including gnocchi al sugo di papera, arrosticini di pecora and aged cheeses.
A wine with an excellent Price/Quality ratio.
It can be found (I fear not for much longer) at around 15/16 Euro per bottle.
