Founded in 1997 by Alessandro Francoli on the hills of Ghemme, in the heart of Alto Piemonte, Torraccia del Piantavigna traces its roots back to the vineyards planted in 1977 by great-grandfather Pierino Piantavigna. Since 2015 the Francoli family has been joined by the Ponti family. The estate counts around 40 hectares of vineyards spread across Ghemme and Gattinara, on alluvial, volcanic and glacial soils at the foot of Monte Rosa. Nebbiolo - locally called Spanna - and Vespolina are the leading varieties, supported by Uva Rara, Croatina and Erbaluce. The flagship labels are Ghemme DOCG and Gattinara DOCG, repeatedly awarded Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso.
