Today we are in Liguria, in the land of cheese focaccia: Recco; I love this product which has held IGP certification since 2012; I enjoy pairing it with an Isaac Baladin; but that's another story: as always, we'll be talking about wine.
Staying at the historic Hotel Ristorante Da O' Vittorio, I take a stroll through the town's wine shop and purchase this Bicesco Bianco from the winery Colle dei Maggioli.
The cantina, founded in the 1980s on the colline del Genovesato, in the locality of Maggiolo, offers visitors a spectacular view of Portofino, at around 100 metres above sea level, among the sea air and centuries-old olive trees.
The name Maggiolo derives from "maggieu", the method that involved "piercing" the soil with an olive or vine branch to test its fertility based on the roots that would form.
In this area Francesco Bisso, a construction entrepreneur "born with the vineyard", founded his estate.
In the lower part of the vineyard, Bianchetta Genovese and Vermentino are planted; in the upper part, Merlot and Sirah.
Bicesco is the result of combining Bisso and Francesco, and under this name the winery produces a red, a white and a rosé.
Today we will taste the white.
Produced from Vermentino and Albarola grapes, it presents itself with a colour of straw yellow tending towards gold; it has a rather intense aroma in which one can detect notes of apple, hawthorn and freshly cut grass; minerality is already perceptible on the nose. On the palate it is dry, very fresh and acidic, pleasantly savoury and quite persistent; it shows a substantial body, far from lightweight. A balanced and fragrant white.
A good purchase, truly based on luck; chosen simply because it was the only producer in the area and I wanted a product made as close as possible to Recco.
